"We could barely get her on solids at home. After 1 week she was demanding more food at dinnertime.
Her language has exploded, her interaction with people is on a whole new level.
The security is top notch, the food prepared fresh every day. She eats better than I do. "
- Max Lake

In our babies’ rooms, individual routines are followed and as a result, opportunities for small group learning are woven naturally throughout the day. Environments are created where children can safely move about and access materials. Beautiful garden spaces support children to develop balancing, walking, running and climbing skills, and are complemented by calming indoor environments.
Children are encouraged to develop self-help skills in feeding, washing hands and caring for resources. There is also a specific Atelier Studio skilling programme where qualified artists support children’s skills in mark making, colour mixing and clay manipulation.
Inquiry-based learning begins even at this young age. Natural, found and recycled materials complemented by carefully chosen educational resources, enable children to develop their understandings of the world and make meaning of their observations and relationships.
We create experiences to explore individually or collaboratively. A spectacular catalyst for a brief exchange, our environments offer a space for investigation and wonder.
Toddlers thrive in environments that value and support their developing skills. It is imperative that toddlers are not rushed through their day, that we advocate for them so that they have enough time to linger on an interesting thing, that they are provided with the time and space to practice self-help skills and that their efforts are recognised and encouraged. We aim to understand and be respectful of each child’s individual sense of time and allow the children to make choices in a calm and unhurried environment.
Meal times, sleep times and toileting are increasingly managed by the children, with guidance and support from educators as required. Cooperation, confidence, persistence, resilience and reflection are developed as educators lead children through predictable but flexible routines. Every part of the day is an opportunity for learning!
Supported by the Educational Leaders and Studio Coordinators, educators identify children’s interests and develop a suite of experiences and opportunities that contribute to learning programmes encompassing experiences in the rooms, Atelier Studio, garden and communal areas.
Amazingly rich learning emerges through small group investigations, explorations and experiments. Curiosity, creativity, commitment, enthusiasm and imagination develop along with understandings of, and connections with, their world. Children resource their own learning through connecting with people, place, technologies and natural materials.
Our 3-Year-Old Kindergarten Programmes focus on children’s burgeoning language development and increased self help skills. Now that they are able to express and identify ideas and feelings more easily, investigations are personalised and more sustained.
Our educators slow the programme down alongside our children, capitalising on each part of the inquiry process from planning and research to hypothesising and experimenting and on to representing ideas and interpreting information.
Mentoring younger children is part of the developing sense of citizenship and responsibility to the community, especially in the Atelier Studio. Well-developed colour mixing, drawing and clay skills along with a thorough understanding of ‘rules and limits’ are shared with toddlers and babies.
Educator’s conversations with children strengthen relationships and guide children as they learn to manage their emotions and interactions with others. Active 3-year-olds temper their own needs and wants with those of others, learning to take turns, share space and work towards a common goal.
Environments are set and re-set with the children, increasing their ownership of spaces and developing their respect for other children’s work and the educational resources and tools used.
In the 4-Year-Old Kindergarten Programme, language, literacy, numeracy, science and technology concepts and skills are strengthened and enriched by well-developed studio skills – manipulating paint, clay, wire, textiles and collage materials.
Words and numbers are everywhere – to be used, read, written, sung, played with and invented. Every investigation, mat time, forum, play-based experience, routine and excursion provides an authentic application of reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, counting and measuring skills.
Children branch out into the community as they travel to sister SOEL centres, the library, art galleries, museums, aged care facilities, and places relevant to the long-term sustained investigations which are now the centrepiece of the 4-Year-Old Kindergarten Programme. Working in small groups, children negotiate the ‘rules and limits’ of spaces, activities, incursions and excursions. They explore ideas, develop theories, test hypotheses, experiment, investigate, research, develop understandings and communicate their learning.
The mentoring of younger children continues as our ‘big’ Kindy children support toddlers and babies to learn self-help skills, embedding these skills themselves as they teach and support others and continue the development of empathy, awareness of others, sharing and taking responsibility.
Children develop knowledgeable and confident self identities. They celebrate and share their contributions and achievements with others.
Our nutritious Child Care menu has been thoughtfully curated by our Executive Chef in collaboration with our experienced centre chefs. To ensure children get the nutrition, variety and consistency they need, meals and snacks are designed to meet WA Health Department Guidelines, Australian Dietary Guidelines and Food Standards Australia New Zealand standards. We also regularly seek feedback from the children to inform menu decisions.
All our food is prepared daily on site by qualified chefs, cycling between a Summer and Winter menu to favour the use of fresh, seasonal foods. Meals are built upon the freshest local produce, with organic fruits and vegetables always chosen when available. No additional salt is added to our meals, and we limit added sugars across all meals, opting for natural sweeteners like fruit purées.
For infants, we follow the Australian Infant Feeding Guidelines, and all practices align with the National Quality Standard to ensure the highest level of nutrition, safety, and developmental care.
Mealtimes at SOEL are designed to be a slow and calming experience where children sit together to eat. Our dining area is central to all of our centres and serves as a space for the children to come together to share meals and engage in conversations about their world.
Children are supervised during all meal and snack times. They are encouraged to sit while eating, serve themselves, and, when appropriate, feed themselves. Our dining room curriculum covers table manners, mealtime rules and limits, mutual respect, enjoyment of food, socialisation, conversational skills, food hygiene, and nutrition.
By championing our children’s learning through thought-provoking and creative encounters, we construct meaningful experiences that meet our families’ and community’s expectations.
We understand that children are strong, capable, and resilient researchers. We are caregivers and co-researchers who collaborate with families to provide a safe environment for the children’s exploration to take place. We provide beautiful and well-thought-out environments that create opportunities for the children to develop their thoughts and understanding.
They can express themselves through any of the Hundred Languages of Children, such as drawing, sculpture, dramatic play, movement, and music. Additionally, the children actively participate in creating and caring for these environments. It is vital that children feel they have ownership over their own space and learning so they feel confident and comfortable. We facilitate this by planning routines, activities, and projects around the children’s own sense of time and rhythm.
While our practice is primarily influenced by the Municipal Schools of Reggio Emilia’s approach to early learning, we believe children benefit most from drawing perspectives and insights from various disciplines, philosophers, and pedagogies from both Australia and abroad. This includes research into children’s rights and advocacy, an anti-bias approach and attachment theories such as Circle of Security and Phoenix Cups.
Our learning programmes are designed based on careful observations of the children. Staff document each child’s learning through a combination of retellings, photographs, videos, and audio recordings, which showcases the children’s individuality, their interactions, and their relationships.
Educators make predictions about where the children’s interests might lead, what skills and knowledge they need, and how those interests may be expressed. All of our programmes incorporate the Early Years Learning Framework and their learning outcomes.e industrys standard dummy text ever since the 1500s.
Literacy and numeracy naturally develop through this inquiry-based learning approach. The children engage in:
By working collaboratively, children develop essential skills such as teamwork, communication, decision-making, and knowledge sharing.
Children’s discoveries and the meanings they derive from them are recorded in various formats, including:
Books, songs, rhymes, chants, and dances offer children opportunities to enhance their listening skills, manage themselves, and participate in a group setting. Additionally, children are encouraged to develop independence, take responsibility for their actions, and find solutions to problems.
